A Hynek
Classification of Distant Encounter is usually
an incident involving an object more than 500
feet from the witness. At night it is
classified as a "nocturnal light" (NL) and
during the day as a "daylight disc" (DD). The
size of the object or the viewing conditions
may render the object in greater detail but
yet not qualify the sighting as a Close
Encounter which is an object within
500'. |
Fran Ridge: July 20, 1948; Arnhem, Netherlands (BB) 1:30 p.m. local. Drawings made by pilots (Chiles/Whitted) very closely resemble a flying object reported to have been seen by A. D. Otter, chief investigator of Court of Damage Inquiry, and his daughter at Arnhem. This object appeared to be a wingless aircraft having two decks. The craft, sighted four times through scattered clouds and unlimited visibility, was traveling at high speed at high altitude. A sound similar to that made by a V-2 was reported. (Paragraph "q" of Top Secret Air Intelligence Report 100-203-79, "Analysis of Flying Object Reports in The U.S." 10 Dec 1948.) This sighting occurred 4 days prior to the C/W case.
