I think the pilot summed up the situation very aptly when he told me, "I don't know what it was, but I've never seen anything like it before or since - maybe it was a spaceship." I went back to Dayton stumped - maybe it was a spaceship.

9:50 a.m.EST. U.S Navy pilot, Lt. James R. Zeitvogel, flying a TBM aircraft near Mitchel AFB, N.Y., sighted an unidentified flying object at 200 to 300 feet altitude.Estimated to be 20 to 30 feet in diameter, the object resembled a parachute canopy and was light colored. Speed estimated 300 knots. Duration: 2-1/2 minutes.
