Ridge: May (middle) 1958; Malmstrom AFB, Montana Nighttime. UFO approached from the north and hovered over the alert hanger, at about 1,000 feet, appeared as a round metallic looking object (called a flying saucer by the guard), no estimate of size is recalled, nor any other details on the object itself. The base radar 1-1/2 miles distant picked up the object as did the FAA radar about five miles away across the city of Great Falls. Object was apparently hovering over the alert hanger and atomic missile and bomb storage building right nearby. Object then slowly moved down the length of the runway, then moved across town (about 3 miles) to the Municipal Airport at Great Falls and hovered over the National Guard (F-89) parking ramp, then flew off. (The lead for this case came from Jan Aldrich in the form of a letter from the Bay Area Subcommitte of NICAP, which is an undated memo. See the report below which was quoted directly from that memo). Dan Wilson: I did a search and found nothing during May 1958 for Malmstrom. If this case is true I rather imagine it would be top secret. I searched all the BB Master Indexes for 1958 and there is just the one case on Aug. 4, 1958 which we already have. I searched the Newspaper archive and found a C-119 plane crash at Malmstrom during the middle of May. The plane had lost power and crashed near the base. |
