Wilson: June 9, 1959; Manassas-Roanoke, Virginia (BBU) At 1:05 p.m. EDT, a number of unknown objects traveling abreast were tracked on an FPS-6 radar of the 649th Radar Squadron (SAGE). The objects were detected at 62,200 feet heading NE at 200 knots. The objects moved out of radar range and faded. The length of observation was 15 minutes. Apparently same objects were picked up NE of Roanoke by adjacent radar sight. Don Ledger: North-east takes them toward Washington, DC. Distance 26 miles from Manassa .The radar site was in Bedford,VA 120 miles southwest of Manassa. One would think that unidentifieds flying towards the vicinity of DC during the Cold War would be of some concern. Note-not testing of experimental aircraft at 62,000 feet at 200 knots over Virginia. The possibility of armed interception ? Could be something conventional but doubful considering the altitudes for 1959. Maybe U-2 (times three) but 200kts and three? Strange.
