Cat 1, Distant Encounter

09-20-1947
September 20, 1947; Off the coast of San Diego, California
Early

Earlier, on 20 September 1947, the Coast Guard at San Diego, Calif., were told that a flaming object had fallen into the sea off that coast, but no check of airports revealed any missing liner or plane, and the Observatory at Griffith Park did not think it was any sort of meteor. Over Toronto,Canada, on the same day, two people photographed an object like a yellow ball with a trail of streamers. The photos showed an oval white spot trailing two milky lights.

I am told that the U.S. military and naval authorities were so perturbed by these frequent reports that came from responsible people, that orders came from high quarters that every effortshould be made to trail these mysterious phenomena.

Note: Sanderson uses the above text in his book but adds this important information . . . :

. . . Odd indeed, since it sounded very much like a meteor, and this is normally orthodoxy's first line of defense in such a case. However, further inquiry elicited the fact that the damned thing maneuvered, and for some time, and had thereby considerably peeved the Coast Guard.
