A Hynek Classification of Distant Encounter is usually an incident involving an object more than 500 feet from the witness. At night it is classified as a "nocturnal light" (NL) and during the day as a "daylight disc" (DD). The size of the object or the viewing conditions may render the object in greater detail but yet not qualify the sighting as a Close Encounter which is an object within 500'.

9:30 p.m. (EDT). Anne Nekel Brown and John Thomas Brown saw bright round disc-shaped object with dome-like structure on top seen when tilted toward the witnesses after hovering stationary to the S at 45 elevation. Object was spinning and then started moving very slowly E over the ocean with an erratic wobbly motion, straightened out then disappeared at high speed to the E at 8 elevation. (Jan Aldrich)
