A Hynek Classification of Distant
Encounter is usually an incident involving an
object more than 500 feet from the witness. At
night it is classified as a "nocturnal light"
(NL) and during the day as a "daylight disc"
(DD). The size of the object or the viewing
conditions may render the object in greater
detail but yet not qualify the sighting as a
Close Encounter which is an object within
500'. |

No. 38 IN-FLIGHT
Fran Ridge: July, 1948; Pasco, Washington 1:00 p.m. Don Newman, a flight mechanic with a private pilot's license, observed a disc-shaped with a dome while lying on a lawn in the company of three other witnesses. Sky was bright daylight, sun obscured by partial clouds. Object solid, sharply outlined, seen passing under high cloud cover, almost negotiated 360 degree turn in 750 ft. radius, followed by a high speed dive toward ground and sudden pull back to high altitude, passed to S and maneuvered rapidly, making final dive toward the N at high speed, finally climbing out of sight. Highest speed “3 times maximum” jet speed. Estimated height when first seen, 3000 to 3500 ft. Estimated size of object was 90 feet. “During procedure of maneuvering object revealed bottom & side views of canopy." Other witnesses were Bonnie Cowan, Valera Lamb, and Virgil Lamb. (From Form 97, more detailed report (*) from summary of letter from witness to Major Keyhoe, dated March 10, 1958. Original letter not in files; summary presumably by DEK, UFO EVIDENCE, 38) |
