Subject: Atlantic Ocean off the New Jersey coast, August 23, 2001

Animal Reaction Feature:

Small, excited bait fish swam to the ocean’s surface as a cylinder hovered over the water.  After the cylinder was gone, the fish subsided.

The Sighting:

At 3:17 PM on a clear but windy day, a 25 year-old fisherman was 45 miles out to sea from the New Jersey coast when a reflection from the east caught his eye.  He saw a small cylinder hovering an estimated 1000 feet over the water and about 1500 feet away.  It emitted no light but had a pulsing, electrical (static) sound.  A compass was disturbed and a GPS screen indicated that no signal could be found.

The cylinder appeared to have two sections that counter rotated [no further description], and there is a reference to a dome on the MUFON form.

The witness went below deck for a camera, but when he returned, the cylinder was gone.  The compass was now behaving normally, the GPS had a signal, and the fish were no longer at the surface. The duration of the sighting estimated as 45 seconds.

Sound and EM effects reported; no physiological effects reported.
