Rating: 5

A Hynek Classification of Distant Encounter is usually an incident involving an object more than 500 feet from the witness. At night it is classified as a "nocturnal light" (NL) and during the day as a "daylight disc" (DD). The size of the object or the viewing conditions may render the object in greater detail but yet not qualify the sighting as a Close Encounter which is an object within 500'.

Object Hovers Over Railway
circa (June?) 1950
Redfern, N.S.W. Australia

Fran Ridge:
June (?) 1950; Redfern, Australia
Sam Kaufman had discovered among his papers this drawing (see below *) by a friend of his, Mr. Frank James. Mr. James, a taxi driver, was on his way to work when he saw this object hovering over the main railway lines into the city of Sydney. The object was over Refern, which is an inner suburb of Sydney. Mr. James and many other people on the street looked up at an object that was dull grey in color. According to James, the “grill” on the underside rotated slowly.  He said the arms were withdrawn when the “thing” moved off. As soon as he arrived at work James drew sketches of the object while the details were still fresh in his memory.

Barry Greenwood:
Attached (see below **) is the source for this report (Data Net, March 1973) and a clip that is the closest thing to what is described in the Australian press for 1950. Even the Data Net report is vague, allowing for the early 50s instead of just 1950. While it is worth a try to find a report in a several year range, it will more likely yield nothing. (Clipping dated June 17)

Keith Basterfield:
I searched: 1. My digitised newspaper collection between 1950-1953; 2. The TROVE National Library of Australia's digitised newspaper collection; 3. My main Australian catalogue; 4. Copies of The Australian Flying Saucer Magazine between Aug 1953 and Feb 1955; 5. Copies of "Flying Saucers" CSI (NZ) 1953-1954; 6. Early RAAF files; all with negative results. No sign of this sighting.
