James Stokes, an employee of Holloman AFB, was driving toward El Paso when car began to sputter and his radio to fade. He saw that several other people had pulled their cars to the side of the road and were looking at something in the sky. Looking up, he saw a large, oval-shaped object pass over the collection of onlookers and then disappear. Exposed parts of his body later turned red and itched as if sunburned. He made a report to the Air Force. None of the other witnesses was ever located.
