Aug. 6 letter from SAF Maj. C. R. Hart says object was
identified as a bolide:
The April 18th, 1962 event noted by Mr. Marbut was
thoroughly investigated by the Air Force because of the unusual amount
of public interest as well as the scientific potential. Depositions
were taken from several well regarded individuals......Detailed study
of the depositions have led to the conclusion that the object was a
"bolide" that exploded as it neared the surface of the earth......Lt.
Colonel Robert Friend and Dr. J. Allen Hynek conducted the
investigation for the Air Force. Detailed reports are on file in this
