The Hulman CAA/Pilot Case
Terre Haute, Indiana; Paris, Illinois; Newport, Indiana
October 9, 1951

Francis Ridge:
The following reports are Item #11 and #12 taken from a list of Air Technical Intelligence UFO sightings and other information secured and cleared for Major Donald E. Keyhoe by Mr. Albert M. Chop, Air Force Press Desk. Of special interest here is the fact that the first report was Case Number 985 of the 701 "Unknowns" listed by Air Force Project Blue Book. The Paris, Illinois, sighting that further supports the assertion that something unknown and shaped "like a flattened sphere" was observed, is item #12, but was not listed separately as an unknown. On the last leg of the UFO's flight, according to official Air Force records (Project Grudge Status Report No.4), "the object then started to travel in a northeasterly direction south of the Newport, Indiana, Atomic Energy Plant.".

The Newport Plant was designed and built by the Girdler Corporation (under the direction of  E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company) and operated by E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. The plant was established in 1942 to produce the explosive material RDX and deuterium (heavy water) used for moderating and cooling production reactors and as a fusion source in early hydrogen bombs. The Dana Heavy Water Plant at Newport was in operation from April 1952 to May 24, 1957, and for some reason was put on standby until July 29, 1959.
