Created: Sept. 18, 2006, Updated Sept. 11, 2007
This is a massive, 85-page, chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1967
. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original 1967 chronology from UFOE II and a huge updated file), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), and Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns). Last, but not least, our thanks to Jean Waskiewicz who created the online NICAP DBase (NSID) that helped make it possible to link from the cases to the reports themselves.

The year, 1967, encompassed a major part of the most intensive and long-lasting UFO sighting wave of all time. The wave was a U.S. and international UFO sighting wave that actually began in 1966. Not only was this a massive sighting wave involving nuclear equipped missile shutdowns, but also a number of humanoid incidents were reported along with the usual ground and air incidents. Other information pertaining to the wave are explored in the following reports, the first one available from the Fund for UFO Research; the others online on the NICAP site:

  • On April 21, 1967 the Strategic Air Command reached the level of 1000 operational Minuteman I and II ICBMs.
  • It is extremely interesting, too, that it was actually 1966 when the US reached a peak of 31,700 of stockpiled nuclear warheads. The year 1967 had 30,893 stockpiled, the third highest total, and 1965 had 31,642 stockpiled warheads, 2nd highest total.
  • This was also the year of the third Arab/Israeli war (June 5-10).
  • By year's end Project Blue Book received 937 UFO reports, even though they classified only 17 as unidentified.
Regarding the incident at Malmstrom on March 16, the 142-page report by Robert Salas and James Klotz can be ordered at Faded Giant. Other missile incidents are explored in the paper by Robert Hastings,  "UFO Sightings at ICBM Sites and Nuclear Weapons Storage Areas" For information on missile deployment, see To Defend & Deter. (1)

The latest update comes from Ref. 3 (see footnotes) by Jacques Vallee, and lists cases from the USSR.

The 1967 UFO Chronology
___________________________________________________________________________________

Jan., 1967 (Unknown date); Galesburg, IL
City, county, and state police were dispatched to an area west of Galesburg, Illinois after reports of sightings of a large UFO, "bigger than a trailer", with blue lights and a funnel on top were received. One Knoxville farmer and several motorists reported that the UFO "was round, big as a house, had no flying lights, but let off a greenish-blue light." Vibrations from the craft could be felt in the farmer's truck as it followed him along the Victoria blacktop about 7:00 PM. ( Skylook 41, p. 13)

Jan. 3, 1967 (approximate); New Richmond, Indiana
Dome-shaped object hovered over car, roadway brightly illuminated. Forward motion slowed, unable to accelerate, loss of steering control (Section VI).

Jan. 5 [25?], 1967; Winsted [Howard Lake?], Minn. (BBU)
4:30 a.m. Civilian man [Lenz?], 32, driving to work stopped to check his 1964 Chevy truck when its engine stalled. He then saw an intense light to his right, coming closer, then landing on the road, so he locked himself inside the truck. Object 75 ft diameter 30 ft high settled on tripod landing gear, an elevator-like device came down, and a man dressed in blue coveralls with "a glass fishbowl on his head," of medium height, seemed to check something then left. (Vallée Magonia 812; FUFOR Index)

Jan. 5, 1967; Philadelphia, PA
5:40 p.m. EST. A bank employee and three others watched a disc-shaped object with alternate red and green lights around it. The object circled over the area and emitted a buzzing sound. Each time it reached the western part of the circle, it stopped and changed to a vertical position, only the red lights visible and brightening, then it flipped back and resumed circling as before. After 45 minutes it shot away to the south. From the point where it disappeared, a square object sped into view going north. This object had a dim, blue-green light on each corner. Shortly afterwards, many aircraft were active in the sky. (U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. III, No. 11, Jan.-Feb., 1967, p. 4.)

Jan. 6, 1967; Harwich, MA
11:45 p.m. EST. A man and his daughter saw a thick, double-convex (lens) shaped disc with a dark upper surface, trapezoidal sections of fluorescent light on the lower portion, and pulsating colored lights (body lights). The object responded to house spotlights by blinking in the same sequence (light reaction). (Air Force report form in Colorado Project files.)

Jan. 7, 1967; St. Louis, MO
5:45 p.m. CST. A man first saw 4-5 square lights in a tilted row (body lights). The object, a domed disc shaped like a straw hat with flickering lights on the dome, then turned bright red. It appeared to be metallic. It hovered, tilted, leveled off, and sped away. (Letter dated 1/21/67 in NICAP files.)

Jan. 8, 1967; Goose Bay AFB, Labrador, Canada (BBU)
USAF MAC C-97 pilot and ground radar operators tracked object at 2,100 knots (2,400 mph). (Project 1947)

Jan. 9, 1967; Lake St. Clair, Detroit, MI
2:30 p.m. Photos by Grant and Dan Jaroslaw, Mt. Clemens, Michigan, four Polaroids depicting a flying saucer. The boys claimed that they observed the saucer pass over low and silently not far from their home. The object remained in view for ten minutes, after which they reported seeing an Air Force helicopter give chase. Dr. Hynek examined the photos and stated in a Detroit News article that there appeared to be no indication of a hoax. Unfortunately, it was. In 1976 the Jaroslaw brothers admitted to perpetrating the prank.

Jan. 9, 1967; Malta, Montana
9:00 p.m. MST. Alerted by their dog, (animal reaction), a farm family saw a large rectangular object that had glowing red light along the bottom and a large amber light on top (body lights) moving at high speed. It landed in a field where it remained for an hour with the red glow its distinguishing feature. Then the object suddenly disappeared as if it had taken off at high speed. (Billings Gazette, Montana, 1/20/67, copy in Donald E. Keyhoe Archives files.)

Jan. 10, 1967; Bruceville, IN
8:30 p.m. EST. A woman and her son, 16, were driving home when they saw an elliptical dull gray object glowing a bluish color around the rim. It was estimated to be 25 feet over the car, 30 feet in diameter and 8 feet thick. The object hovered, moved slowly, then accelerated away. It displayed a disc shape when it banked slightly, and it had several dim lights (body lights) on its rim. (Ridge, 1994, p. 19. from APRO Bulletin No. 15.)

Jan. 10, 1967; Bangor, PA
10:50 p.m. EST. An electronics technician heard an intermittent sound that changed in pitch, then saw over the treetops two brilliant lights. Each light was dome-shaped and had a ring at the outer circumference. The objects maintained a constant position relative to each other. They moved, hovered, and then faded. A light beam was emitted to the ground, then disappeared. The initial lights then reappeared and the objects departed vertically at high speed. (Narrative from witness in Donald E. Keyhoe Archives files.)

Jan. 11, 1967; Aveyon, France
Cat. 3.  White ball, oval near ground, whistling sound, heat, paralysis, car vibrating, road sign. (Flying Saucer Review, Vol. 17, No. 1; See Rodeghier, 1981, p.31)

Jan. 13, 1967; Iola, KS
1:30 a.m. CST. A 9-year-old saw a circular object with lighted dome, numerous body lights, short wings, three wheels hanging down, a door, and windows. A strange-looking man wearing a crinkley green suit stood in the door, sometimes illuminated by a rotating red light. The object hovered over a field, circled the house, and flew away. (Report from a dairy farm owner, Iola , KS, in NICAP files.)

Jan. 13, 1967; SW New Mexico, NW of El Paso, Tex., to Flagstaff-Winslow, Ariz. (BBU)
10 p.m. Pilot Carl M., an FO, and a passenger Jimmie Moran on a Lear Jet 23 en route from Houston, Tex., to Las Vegas, Nev., at 41,000 ft and 300 knots airspeed (Mach 0.82 or about 540 mph TAS) on a 300° heading saw a flashing [?] red oval luminous object in the 10 o'clock position. Object split into 4 similar red oval objects vertically a number of times, each separated by about 2,000 ft and each emitting a "red ray," then retracting the lowest objects up into the top object. Albuquerque radar tracked the object 39 miles ahead of the Lear jet moving on the same heading, with no transponder signal and at that moment the object blinked off visually for 30 seconds then blinked on. Albuquerque control contacted a National Airlines DC-8 over Casa Grande, Ariz., whose pilot confirmed the Lear pilot's reports. Albuquerque control warned the Lear that the object suddenly darted towards the Lear at high speed within seconds until the radar blips merged [possibly 39 miles in 10 seconds or roughly 14,000 mph]. Object flooded the Lear with intense red light so bright the pilot had difficulty seeing his instrument panel, and it maintained position in front of the Lear for a few minutes then, then blinked out then came on again and started falling back behind the left wing, then pulled forward again. (When the object blinked off radar at Albuquerque controllers would lose the object then regain it when it blinked on again (?).) Both UFO and Lear jet made left turns over Winslow, Ariz., then Los Angeles Center radar picked up both targets. Past Flagstaff the object climbed at a 30° angle disappearing to the W in <10 seconds. (Hynek UFO Experience chapter. 7, case RV-1; NARCAP; BB files??)

Jan. 15(?), 1967; Boxford, MA
3:00 a.m. EST. A witness saw a bright red object that looked like an upside down saucer (disc) with a white glowing rim. The object approached and circled the witness's home before moving away and disappearing. (Fowler, 1974, p. 343.).

Jan. 15, 1967; Granville, MA
5:45 p.m. EST. A woman and her two nieces saw a domed disc with white light emanating from portholes in its base. A humming sound was heard, and the sky and ground were illuminated by white light. Red flame jets appeared at one end when motion occurred. Speed was variable. At one point all its lights went out, and when they came back on, the portholes were showing red light. The object was seen three times within 20 minutes before disappearing. (Hartford Courant, Conn., 1/16/67; Gillmor, 1969, case 13; Keyhoe and Lore, 1969a, p. 45; U.F.O Investigator, Vol. III, No. 11, Jan-Feb, 1967, p. 4.)

Jan. 15, 1967; North Granby, CN
Unspecified time. Six miles to the southeast of Granville, MA in North Granby, Conn., two women saw a disc-shaped object with a flange around it and white beams of light from portholes. The object passed  between witnesses and a mountain.  (Springfield Union, Mass., 2/22/67, copy in Keyhoe Archives)

Jan. 15, 1967; Roosevelt, UT
6:00 p.m. MST. Two couples saw a yellow glow coming from inside a dome-shaped object estimated to be two miles away. The object hovered and moved around slowly. (Salisbury, 1974, Case 40, Table 1)

Jan. 16, 1967; Charleston, South Carolina (BBU)
(McDonald list)

Jan. 16, 1967; Warner, NH
5:00 p.m. EST. A motorist noticed a bright light seemingly pacing him. A long cigar-shaped object with amber windows eventually came toward him on a slow and steady course, and he heard a soft purring sound. On one side was a blinking red light. Two very bright white lights were on the ends of protrusions sticking out from the sides near the front and these lights shone ahead like headlights. A second witness (retired missionary), was alerted and she reported seeing two bright light beams pointed earthward with a dark area between. The lights were bright yellow in the center and white around the edges. (New Hampshire NICAP Subcommittee report, NICAP files.)

Jan. 16, 1967; Warner, NH
5:15 p.m. A couple in the same area reported seeing a slow-moving gray object with body lights. At 5:30 pm a woman and her daughter saw an object that looked like a box kite without paper (presumably rectangular) with two bright headlights on the front. The object was moving slowly, and hovering soundlessly, but there was a purring sound when it started to move away rapidly. All witnesses reported the object to be huge. (U.F.O Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 12, Mar.-Apr., 1967, p. 5.)

Jan. 16, 1967; Southeastern United States
Approximately 4:30-6:30 A.M. Sodium vapor clouds from rocket launched at Eglin AFB, FL, blue-green color, visible over wide area.

Jan. 17, 1967; Freetown, IN
Francis Bedel, Jr., (23) of Portland, Indiana, was driving on State Highway 135, a two-lane blacktop road, north of Freetown, he later reported to State Police, when a brilliant glowing white light darted into his field of vision. It apparently hovered over the road for a few seconds, then slowly reversed its course. Bedel was so busy staring at the spectacle that he lost control of his car, which left the road and was badly damaged. State Police who investigated said that Bedel was not drinking and was not injured in the crash. (NICAP files)

Jan. 17, 1967; Same evening; Freetown, IN
On the same stretch of highway on the same night, Mr. & Mrs. Phil Patton of Freetown, reported to State Police that a brightly lighted disc-shaped craft, about 30 feet in diameter, came down alongside their car. Mr. Patton told State Trooper Conrad that the object moved along the highway right in front of their car and about one hundred feet distant from it. They estimated that it was about 100 feet above the road and they described it as a circular in shape and about the size of a small house. The Patton's reported to police that they heard no sound from the object but that its outstanding characteristic was the extreme brilliance of its lights, predominately red but with flashing yellow and white along the side or bottom of the thing. After a half a minute, it flashed up and away. According to state police who investigated, the description given by the Patton's was identical to that given by Francis Bedel, the young man who wrecked his car while watching a similar spectacle, about a mile from the scene of the Patton's experience. (NICAP files)

Jan.18, 1967; S. Williamstown, MA
12:15 a.m. EST. Four witnesses saw a flash in the sky just before a power failure occurred. Then they saw a domed disc with body lights. It was near the ground on the opposite bank of the Green River. A red glowing object buzzed their car as they drove away. (Air Force report, Project Blue Book files, National Archives; Fowler, 1974, p. 343.)

Jan. 18, 1967; Norton, MA
6:30-6:45 a.m. EST. A man saw a cloud-like object with flat bottom, a dome on top, and a blue stripe. It hovered over an airport, then accelerated and sped away, disappearing in 3 seconds. (Robinson letter, NICAP files.) Independent observation: At 7:00 a.m. a patrolman in Mansfield, Mass., about 6 miles north of Norton, apparently independently of the above witness, saw an object with flat bottom and domed top that appeared fuzzy and cloud-colored, with a horizontal stripe of gas-flame-like blue color. (NICAP report form.)

Jan. 18, 1967; Shamokin, PA
6:00 p.m. EST.  A family watched a disc with a red light on a projection at the rear approach at low altitude (estimated 400-500 feet), viewed through binoculars. As it neared, the object emitted two pinkish-white light beams downward at about a 45-degree angle from its forward edge. It then turned, rose suddenly, joined a second object and both sped away. (Keyhoe and Lore,1969a, p.43.)

Jan.19, 1967; Dunbar, WV
9:05 a.m. EST. The owner of an appliance store saw a dull aluminum-colored sphere with a flange around the middle and a window at the top hovering about 4 feet over the road ahead of him. He estimated it to be 25 feet in diameter. When he was 10 feet from it, the object took off and swiftly rose out of sight. Two projections like antennae were visible on the top and two legs underneath, with an apparent propeller between them that revolved slowly while the object was hovering, faster during ascent. (NICAP report; Charleston Gazette, 1/20/67; Huntington Herald 1/20/67; Keyhoe and Lore, 1969a, sketch p. 46; Flying Saucer Review, 13 (3), May-June 1967, p. 4; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 11, Jan.-Feb., 1967, p. 4, dated as Jan. 17.)

Jan. 19, 1967; Milan, IN
3:00 p.m. A photograph was reportedly taken of a UFO by Reed Thompson, a 15-year-old boy from Milan. The town constable stated that the boy was reliable and said that he had seen the photo himself. His report to NICAP Indiana Unit No. 1 stated he watched the object for 5-7 minutes before it sped off. Later, one of Indiana's field investigators, Don Worley, obtained further information and a black & white copy of the original color photo, along with a report and drawings. (Ridge, APRO & NICAP files)

Jan. 19, 1967; Shamokin, PA area
Around 6:00 p.m. Another family reported two objects, one with light beams with red/green blinking lights across the front, a halo of bright light, and two "antennae" on the top. About 45 minutes later, a pastor reported following an object in his car that had two antennae on the top near the rear of the object.  (U.F.O. Investigator, Jan.-Feb., 1967, p. 8.)

6:30 p.m. EST. Three girls, 16-17 years old, were traveling in an automobile when they saw a string of 9-10 bright red lights on a dark object that was moving over a field. The object hovered, and swung around, revealing lights of a different color and configuration. When the girls stopped to watch, their car stalled and the radio and lights went off (EM effects). Four glowing body lights were arranged in a trapezoid pattern, red lights on top and white lights forming the base. The lights appeared to be reflecting off a metal surface. The object started moving slowly and then shot away at high speed. Independent observation: A second car about 3 miles away driven by an adult male accompanied by his daughter and a friend saw 7-8 bright lights flying low. (Fowler, 1974, pp. 138-43; Sagan and Page, 1972, p. xxvi.).

Jan. 20, 1967; Over Lake Ontario
10:15 p.m. EST A pilot and his three passengers saw a round, glowing white object the size of a large apartment building, with a ring of red lights around it that blinked off and on. The object was above the plane at about 2,000 feet. The pilot was so disturbed by the sighting that he aborted the flight, returned to the airfield and landed. (Letter to APRO dated April 2, 1967, posted on NICAP web site.)

Jan. 21, 1967; Gering, NE

One passenger, who insisted on remaining anonymous, succeeded in saving his film from which this single photograph was made.

Feb. 2, 1967; Sumner, IL
A well-known craftsman, who requested anonymity, reported to the Lawrenceville-Vincennes Airport that he observed an object for one and a half hours that was doing some pretty good stunts. It hovered, accelerated, changed shape and color, was observed with the naked eye, 7- power binoculars, and a 20x spotting scope. It was described as a very bright red object, flashing like a red neon sign. The upper portion was a very bright white and red and green lights were observed around the object. The object was seen in the east northeast and noticed because of its brightness arid erratic movement. It seemed to have a very thick rim (Ridge, NICAP files).

NARA-PBB86-1249 document is a table of contents for a 71-page report and  a cover page by the Foreign Technology Division, AFSC (Air Force Systems Command).

Feb. 3, 1967; Piggott, AR

Barker of the Seymour State Police post reported he followed a huge ball of greenish-blue and white lights for some 10 miles about 2:30 AM before the light moved west towards Bedford. "It had a flat bottom, just under basketball size, and had a brilliant blue-green light rotating around it counterclockwise. Barker said he was in the vicinity of Crothersville in Jackson County when he first spotted the changing lights, "It was maybe 300-500 feet high and had three red flashing lights under it," he said. "I got within what seemed like about a mile of it and it started moving south. Barker said he never did lose sight of it and it didn't leave any trail. He said when it got to Littleyork it hovered for a while and then took off fast, "It wasn't like any airplane I've ever seen, " he said. "I know it wasn't a plane." (Ridge, NICAP files)

6:00 a.m. The woman reporting requested anonymity. The report she gave to the DAILEY HERALD-TELEPHONE provided the most vivid description of an unidentified flying object observed as far southwest as Oakland City and as far east as Crothersville......35 miles away. At this time she arose because of noises on the roof roof. She thought it was raining. That's when she saw what looked like a quarter moon that was moving toward her. "I watched it for a half hour," she said. "It would move, then hover, getting closer all the time. It had a bright light on the bottom. The light kept going around and back and forth an the ground like it was looking for some place to land. As it got closer I could see a bright band around the middle of it," she continued. "It was oval-shaped, sort of like a cigar. The top was shiny, like metal, and the bottom was kind of orange. There was a crater on the bottom of it--and bumps, like legs." It hovered near a utility pole behind her house for ten minutes. She said when she started to dial her telephone to call someone about it the object "turned real bright orange and then blue and took off." (Ridge, Clipping in NICAP files)

April 10, 1967; Fayette County, IN
9:45 p.m. A glowing orange-yellow ball that swung in a large arc was observed by two witnesses for 20 minutes. It moved closer and became a huge dark object which reminded the witnesses of a passenger coach of a train with seven tall windows emitting light. (Don Worley)

April 11, 1967; Orange, MA

April 11, 1967; Royalston, MA
6:50 p.m. EST. (11 miles northeast of Orange). Two witnesses saw a mass of very bright lights, brighter than the moon which was visible. They descended and hovered, before moving slowly out of sight on an upward course. (Fowler, 1974, p. 346.)

April 11, 1967; Woodville, ID
9:30 p.m. PST. While driving, a woman saw an amber-colored object shaped like a disc with a tall dome. She estimated that it was at a height of two telephone poles and as large as a car. The object looked like plastic and had vertical risers evenly spaced around a "conning tower." A bright curved surface appeared to be hanging from a "brim which extended from rim to rim" of what looked like a "top hat." The object hovered, moved slowly against the wind, passing directly overhead, hovered over lava beds where it emitted two fireballs with sparkles, then two more a few minutes later. Finally it went dark and disappeared. (Ricks letter, NICAP files; The U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. IV, No. 1, May-June 1967, p. 1.) [Note: The main reported features of appearance, performance, and mode of disappearance all suggest a hoax hot-air balloon carrying candles or flares.]

April 12, 1967; Hackettstown, NJ
Night. Five people, including a policeman, watched a revolving object with a red middle, green lights on both ends, and white lights on the bottom (body lights) for 1.25 hours. The object left a white trail, and it started and stopped many times, becoming all white when not moving (color/motion correlation). (NICAP report form.)

April 12, 1967; Coastal Keys Highway
8:30 p,m. EST. Six members of a team while doing underwater film work for ABC News saw five bright white lights in formation, pulsating bright-dim on a 1/2-second cycle and maneuvering around each other as they passed at about 200 feet altitude. Witnesses, in two 16-foot boats in windy weather with choppy waves, included a former aircraft carrier pilot, two former submarine sailors, and a boat captain guide. (Letter to Herb Roth, 5/5/67, in NICAP files.)

April 12, 1967; Phoenix, AZ

April 17, 1967; New Haven, WV
8:45 p.m. EST. Independent witnesses in six locations saw a glowing object with lighted ports. A pharmacist saw and followed the object as it flew up the Ohio River at an estimated 500 feet altitude. The object circled back and emitted two huge light beams to the ground from its bottom. This appeared to be a reaction to his flashing his headlights (light reaction). Three miles away a boy in a pony wagon crashed when the animal bucked as it saw the object. Another woman said that her dogs were upset when the object passed (animal reactions). She sketched a round shape with two cone-shaped protuberances sticking out from the sides of the white ball. These protuberances contained rows of porthole-like openings. A farmer reported that the craft hovered above a field and shone its lights down. He said the lights were blindingly bright. Several witnesses, including a sheriff, reported a bright yellow light with objects protru
