The 1983 UFO Chronology
Created: February 15, 2008 This is currently a 5-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1983. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to Richard Hall (the original 1983 chronology from UFOE II), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]. You will note the many foreign reports that we are now being able to access. Our special thanks to Dan Wilson for getting those to us. As more come in, this page will be updated. Previous chronologies (1947 to 1969) involved the expertise of two other team members: William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive) and Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns). Feb. 3, 1983; near Mobile, AL
1:10 AM. A 28-year-old woman observed a very large metallic,
cylindrical flying object with structural detail up close while driving
on a highway near Mobile. She could see 20-30 occupants inside through
the windows. They appear to pay no attention to her, although she feels
a sense of euphoria during the event. She had earlier had dreams of a
UFO abduction encounter including a physical exam. (Sources: Ed Brown,

Measure of a Mystery, case 103).
Feb. 19, 1983; Swansea, Glamorgan, South Wales
Daytime. Up to 200 people observed a huge triangular shaped UFO
pass overhead in various places along the South Wales coast. They
included a class of schoolchildren and a football team. In Swansea two
detectives, DS Mike Troake and DC Gethen Humphreys saw the object glide
overhead in total silence. DS Troake said, “I’m used to seeing aircraft
in the sky but this was massive-much bigger than a plane. There was a
large main cluster of lights at the front shaped a bit like a Zeppelin
followed by a triangular group of lights. They moved gracefully across
the sky about 1000 feet up.” Fearful of ridicule neither officer
reported the incident to their colleagues. UFO CLASSIFICATION NL

thoughts. It had a crisscross lattice structure and tubes on its
underneath side. Their car radio experience RF interference. Another
independent witness that night saw probably the same object, a V-shaped
array of 50 lights with the colors amber, red, and blue. (Sources: J.

7:30 PM. A motorist in his 1982 Toyota was driving home on a
clear evening when his car gradually lost power and coasted to a stop.
The headlights were still on. He got out to inspect the engine and
noticed a wire fence throwing off sparks. Looking in that direction he
saw beyond the fence an object about 100 feet away and 15-20 feet above
the ground, dark cigar-like in shape with a blue haze around it.
The object began moving, an apparent shape change due to different
perspective, and moved out of sight in the distance after about 30
seconds. (Tasmanian U.F.O. Investigation Centre, 1983.)
July 22, 1983; Houston, TX
9:30 PM. A huge silent, stationary, boomerang shaped UFO
with two large orange lights and many smaller lights in the middle of
the V was sighted hovering over the suburbs in Houston, Texas. It then
moved away past many witnesses. There was a wind sound but no jet
noise, and was lost from sight in the distance. (Source: Richard Hall,
MUFON UFO Journal, November 1982, p. 14, citing John Schuessler).
Aug. 9, 1983; Winifreda, La Pampa province, Argentina
7:30 PM. A 34-year-old man named Platner saw a UFO and
followed it in his van. When he stepped out of his van he was paralyzed
by a beam of light. Four small humanoids wearing diver suits with large
round eyes, one of them a female, emerged from the craft and
communicated with him using telepathy. He was taken aboard the craft,
undressed, a blood sample was taken, and he subsequently became
unconscious. When he came to again he was on top of his van. (Sources:

1:10 AM. Two witnessed a domed disc-shaped object at low
altitude around their mobile home and garage west of Flint, Michigan.
The object had two "headlights." (Source: MUFON UFO Journal, September
1983).
Aug. 13/14, 1983; Shipley, West Yorkshire, England
A motorist stopped at a scenic overlook saw a bright
pulsating light crossing his line of vision at eye level. As it neared
he could see that its light was pulsating every two seconds. He could
bow see that the light was on a disc-shaped object with shiny domed top
that was revolving and dark underside. It passed out of sight in about
2-3 minutes. (West Yorkshire UFO Society, 1983.)

car lights blinked off and on; car dropped hard back onto road, engine
stalled; severe physiological effects (NICAP UFO Evidence II, Section
VI).
Oct. 25, 1983; Bend, OR
8:00 PM. An experienced sky observer named Kraus at the Pine
Mountain Observatory in Bend, Oregon watched a red light, possibly with
antennas shoot toward him. It lit up the area incredibly brightly as it
hovered over the observatory, then drifted off toward the west. (Source:
Doris Graziano, APRO Bulletin, July 1984, p. 8).
Oct. 31, 1983; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
5:10 PM. An F-5E interceptor was scrambled by the Brazilian
Air Force as many witnesses in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil reported a
silvery spot maneuvering over city. The official explanation was
balloon, but UFO researchers in Brazil don't accept it as plausible.

Nov. 1983; Spencer, IN Dawn. Humanoid report. No details. (Sympap,84) Nov. 7, 1983; near Skipton, North Yorkshire, England
7:55 PM. Between Bolton Abbey and Addingham near Skipton, North
Yorkshire, whilst driving with his wife, PS Tony Dodd observed a
large disc shaped UFO approaching the vehicle from their right. He
estimated the size of the craft as being four times that of a car. It
was at a low altitude and passed almost directly over the car roof
before disappearing behind nearby trees. His wife described the craft
as resembling a child’s spinning top. Moments later the same UFO
reappeared and swept toward the car once again. PS Dodd pulled the car
over to a stop and took a series of photographs of the object as it
moved away into the distance. The photographs were later sent to a
research facility called Ground Saucer Watch in Arizona that specialize
in the analysis of reported UFO images. Their conclusion after analysis
was that the photographs had recorded a genuine UFO on film, one of the
few to meet their strict criteria. They estimated that the object was
30 feet in diameter and was near spherical in shape. This forms a
series of sightings by the officer who later became one of the world’s
leading authorities on the subject of UFOs. UFO CLASSIFICATION

29, 1983 Letter From Sarbacher to Steinman
Sarbacher
confirms
recovery of flying saucers, but says he knows of no specifics. Confirms that Vannevar Bush was definitely involved and also
mathematician John von Neuman; probably Robert Oppenheimer as
well. Corroborates that an interview took place with Bremner and
the answers cited by Smith were probably the ones he provided. The flying saucer materials were reported to be "very light and very
tough." The aliens were described as being insect like, in that
they were small with low mass, enabling them to withstand high
accelerations. In later interviews, Sarbacher hinted at being
more involved and knowing more than he does in this letter. (Letter
from Dr. Sarbacher to Steinman, Nov. 29, 1983)
Dec. 12, 1983; Byron, IL
A triangular flying object was sighted by three men. It
moved erratically and made no sound. It had blinking red and white
lights. Its erratic path was detected on FAA radar at the Greater
Rockford, Illinois airport. (Source: APRO Bulletin, September 1984, p.
8).
Dec. 15, 1983; Glasgow, Scotland
6:25 AM. Mr. Coventry reported seeing a fog in which all
sounds stopped. A gray flying object the shape of a railroad car, but
with a convex curved roof, then appeared, making crackling and humming
sounds. The UFO had three porthole-shaped windows in the side, and what
appeared to be a yellow smoke swirled around in the interior of the
object. It shot up into the sky and was gone. (Source: Ron Halliday,
UFO Scotland: The secret history of Scotland's UFO phenomenon, p. 88).
Dec. 20, 1983; Riverside, CA
5:30 PM. Witness driving in Riverside had his car buzzed by
a 7" wide sphere that had pegs protruding from it. It flew by the car
at eye level. (Source: MUFON UFO Journal, December 1983, p. 4).
Dec. 27, 1983, Indianapolis, IN
10:30 PM. A small disc-shaped object with eight bright green lights descended from the sky and landed in an open field across the street from the home of the witness. After about ten seconds, the bright lights suddenly went out and the disc was no longer visible. Hoping to see the disc take off, the woman continued to observe the area for an hour before retiring for the night. A second report was received from a woman driving in the same area during the same time period. She observed a fixed group of bright green lights descending from the sky and appear to land in a corn field. (MUJ-190) References:
