The rest of the story.  After this was published on the PJ47 website, the author of this letter contacted me.  He had written a short account of this <>sighting for a small West Coast aviation magazine....he was able to date the sighting to April 1943 using his log books.  He did met the student pilot again in 1952 as they both worked for the CAA.  The former student pilot let him know he did not wish to discuss the UFO sighting. He also witnessed during a test of the prototype B-52 in 1954 a spindle shaped object cross the exhaust of the the aircraft burning the exhaust trail away where the object crossed it.  He contacted the pilot afterwards and asked him if he knew about the object.  The reaction was, change your brand of whiskey.
