A Hynek Classification of Distant Encounter is usually an incident involving an object more than 500 feet from the witness. At night it is classified as a "nocturnal light" (NL) and during the day as a "daylight disc" (DD). The size of the object or the viewing conditions may render the object in greater detail but yet not qualify the sighting as a Close Encounter which is an object within 500'.

An erratic dancing light was sighted adjacent to rocket Launcher Apron 1, Range B. The light alternated from a deep orange to yellow and was egg shaped, approximately 500 feet away. Its apparent size was three times the magnitude of Venus. Clouds at the time were at 15,000 feet altitude. I read a recent NICAP post which mentions a "dancing light" seen at Woomera, South Australia, on 21 October 1954. I checked the National Archives of Australia file SA5281, titled "Unusual Occurrences Flying Saucer At Woomera." It has four pages on this report. I attach them for the records.
