Ligonier, Indiana
July 13, 1993
Animal Reaction Feature:
Four kenneled dogs, which normally did not bark, barked during the sighting
of 3 red-orange lights as they flew by the house going NW.
Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist:
This is one of eight different reports in a 15 or 20 mile diameter circle
in the rural NE corner of Indiana investigated on site by MUFON investigators
(See “Source” material below). All sightings occurred between
9 pm and 9:35 pm, and all involved reports of red lights. Two of the sightings
reported animal reactions (also see AR case Syracuse,
IN, 7-13-93, 9:15 pm [case log #931243J]).
This Ligonier event occurred at 9:00 pm and at 9:20 pm. The sky was reported
as clear. The witness, 35, was in the car with her mother and two children
when they noticed red lights hovering over railroad tracks as a freight train
passed. They stopped and looked at the lights, which then moved west.
About 20 minutes later, the witnesses had arrived at their home and saw the
same lights moving to the NW past their house, and the dogs reacted as described
above.
It is not clear if the description of the lights refers to the 9:00 pm or
9:20 pm sightings, or both. The description is of 3 steady red-orange
lights in a horizontal line with 18-25 feet between two of the lights and
10-15 feet to the third. The pattern of lights rotated as a unit but
no connecting structure was observed. Minimum altitude was given as
25 feet, and the minimum distance from observers, as 400 feet.
Although these witnesses did not report a sound associated with the red lights,
others did (see Syracuse, IN, AR case referred to above and MUFON Journal
No. 336). At 9:30 pm two teenagers reported a low-pitched him
when the red lights were nearest them (less than 500 feet in altitude and
less than 500 feet away [case log #931241J], and at 9 pm a woman and her child
saw the lights while driving and reported a high-pitched whine [case log 931242J].
