FORM 112 - MADAR SIGHTING
INFORMATION REPORT
VINCENNES, INDIANA - AUGUST 30, 1970
I. DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT
August 30, 1970; Vincennes, Indiana, in a small subdivision east of
town, at approximately 11:00 AM, the primary witness, his wife and
seven-year-old daughter were in the process of packing for a trip.
He was interrupted by his daughter who claimed she saw a strange
object in the sky. He and his wife went outside and saw the object,
as well. He hurredly re-entered the house to get his 7x50
binoculars, and when he emerged, the object was now much closer. He
described it as a metallic, disc-shaped craft, and "like a garbage
can lid with a piece of watermelon on top", hovering over Wheatland
Road. The estimated size was 30' in diameter. The witnesses also
stated emphatically that someone else MUST have seen it, also. "They
had to, it was so low." At the end of the 90 second period of
observation the object finally dived and arced out of sight behind a
tree line.
II. DETECTION DATA
The detection device was a magnet variometer, mode level one which
means it had an alarm but no data-gathering capability. The device
was approximately 3-5 miles from the sighting area and was not
triggered. A week later, on September 8, it WAS triggered. And also
unusual was the event-time 4:45 in the afternoon. But, there were no
visual sightings reported for
that particular day. In 1970 there was no UFO "grapevine", nor was
there any rapport with the media and law enforcement as we later
had. And there was no published UFO "hotline". Even more suspicious,
on September 22, there was another trigger at 12:30 PM. Both had
been daylight events, but with no reported visual
sightings. The chance of a coincidence was mighty slim.
III. STATUS OF INVESTIGATION
A form 97 (NICAP) was completed and signed by the witness.
IV. CONCLUSIONS
Nothing much can be said about any direct correlation, but the
proximity of two detection events in time is very compelling that
something of a UFO nature was responsible.
